This stunning house was extensively refurbished in 2021 by award-winning Iinternational architects, Max.archi and has featured in architectural and design magazines. The house is in the heart of Modica Bassa and is just one flight of steps up from the restaurants and attractions of Modica. Despite its proximity to the centre of the town, this house is in the quiet backstreets of the historic centre.

The house is approached via a main door which leads to an entrance courtyard with original stone walls and a cistern below the house. Jasmine and vines provide shade for outside dining. There are stairs leading up to a roof terrace with panoramic views over St Giorgo cathedral and the city.

Inside the house there is a dining room with space for six-eight people to sit comfortably leading to a fully equipped kitchen (dishwasher, fridge freezer, oven, electric induction hob and washing machine). Local Modican stone surfaces cover the kitchen tops and an island and breakfast bar provide additional preparation surfaces and a space to eat. The kitchen has soaring high ceilings, large amounts of hand made storage and cupboards. made by local craftsmen with a velux window in the roof. The walls have been taken back to their original stone and original Sicilian maiolica tiles dating back to the early 19th century are included to bring colour to the kitchen splashback.

A family bathroom with shower, WC and bidet with original tiled floors is adjacent to the kitchen. The house has retained its vaulted ceilings which give added height to the three main living and sleeping areas. Each double bedroom has its own ensuite and the master bedroom retains the old Sicilian bed chamber which has been faithfully restored with lighting and alcoves for books and now houses a queen sized bed.. Above the master bedroom, stairs lead up to a single bedroom which can be used as a study or workspace. Each room has new handmade wooden shutters and wooden doors have been either restored or replaced. The floors in the house are all resin – ensuring that they retain coolness during the summer. In two of the rooms, ‘rugs’ of 19th century Sicilian floor tiles have been inserted, adding colour to each room. There is a dual air-conditioning unit and heater in each of the rooms in the main house allowing for heat in winter and a/c in the summer.

With a separate entrance one of the dammusi has these has been developed into a beautiful double bedroom with original floors in pietra pece and an ensuite shower and wc/basin.  The other dammuso is now a technical room for the property.

The house has been beautifully restored, retaining original features but updated with modern appliances. The views from the bedrooms and living areas over the old town and St Giorgio cathedral are unparalleled and uninterrupted, making this a unique design-focused space.
